The number of Sikh Welfare concerns were rising in the early 1990s, resulting
in a growing neccesity for a focus organization to meet the needs . The
Sikh institutions in Singapore worked over a period of two years to conceptualize
and strategize ways and means to handle the above issue.
The Sikh Welfare Council was institutionalised in the 1995, with the
blessings of all the key Sikh Instituions and elders in the community.

Our Mission
To provide for the social, spritual and financial support for Sikh families
and individuals with the ultimate aim of enabling them to become self
reliant, self supporting and valued member of the Sikh community

Formulate in consultation with Sikh Advisory Board an overall
community policy in respect of Sikh welfare

- Carry out regular needs assessment to improve the quality of
welfare programmes

- Employ full time staff to administer and coordinate welfare
programmes

various programmes

Our Implementation Strategies
To implement the above key objectives, various committees were formed
to address the various needs of the Sikh community in Singapore, namely:
- Prison Counselling and Rehabilitation Committee
- Provide spritual and rehabilitative counselling to Sikh
prisoners
- Study the needs of Sikh prisoners in jail
- Provide a link between the prisoners and the families if the need
arise
- Assist Sikh prisoners in finding meaning ful employment upon release
- Follow up counselling for prisoners afer being released
- Family Bereavement related Assistance Programme
- Ensuring Council representative meet up with the bereavd
family at the earliest opportunity
- Assisting affected family in attending to the administrative arrangements
for the cremation of the deceased
- Arranging for a hearse according to the wishes of the family
- Providing guidance on a procedural and ceremonial matters
- Providing spiritual counselling to the individuals affected by
the bereavement in the family
- Arranging with management of the Gurdwara, selected by the faimily,
for th priest to attend to the final rites
- Providing relevant assistance to the family up to the day of the
Path Da Bhog for the departed soul
- Family Support and Counselling Programme
- Providing of counselling for the family members or individuals
upon request
- Liasing with the Family Service Center of SINDA and Ministry of
Community Development for Sikh family needs
- Publicising in the community of various available national programme
pertaining to the development and cohesion of the family as a basic
social unit
- Studying of family needs for the follow up action by other committees
under the council
- Promoting family values as proposed by the Sikh way of life
- Hospital Visits Programme
- Obtaining information from Sikh families and institution
regarding the location of Sikh patients in hospital who are seriously
ill
- Organising visits by the representative of Council or rather qualified
individuals to hospitals
- Studying the needs of Sikh patients in the hospital and their
families
- Planning and carrying out regular and appropriately structured
visits to Sikh patients in Intensive Care Unit of hospital and Sikh
patients who are terminally ill
- Providing families of seriously ill Sikh patients with guidance
from various health and medical specialists, etc
- Financial Assistance Committee
- Preparing the Annual Budget for the Welfare assistance
in January of every year for the approval by the council
- Monitoring regularly the state of funds available for welfare
services
- Providing and approving all cases of the financial assistance
to the Sikh individuals and families
- Refering cases for educational assistance to the Singaproe Education
Foundation
- Directing the full time staff to further investigate request for
financial assistance
- Committee for Counselling and Rehabilitation of Sikh Drug Addicts
- Liase with SANA Sikh counselling services
- Ensure regular weekly visits to Sikh inmates to DRCs
- Monitor regularly the state of drug abuse by Sikh youth in Singapore
- Ensure the regular follow up counselling is carried out for Sikh
drug addicts released from DRCs
- Liase with families for Sikh drug Addicts to enhance family support
- Organise preventative programmes for Sikh youths
